I remember the day my dad told me how I was the only kid in the family who did not like to play with other kids. The other adults in my life were enforcers, and they enforced the idea that I should be social. For a long time, I felt like an enforcer — always on guard for what people were thinking about me, and what people thought of me. I was afraid to trust other people. I felt like if I opened up about my true thoughts and feelings, I would be hurt or rejected.
