Tessai is the party leader of the Vanguard. He is strong-willed, but can be easy-going, as seen in his interactions with his own teammates. Tessai's signature move is the Spirit Spear attack. He is also friends with Ryouma and Kyouya, who are also members of the Vanguard. Tessai can be very serious at times, as seen when he confronted Kariya about the latter's supposed death. He also seems to have a fondness for nature, as evidenced by his nature themed skillset. He is also rather trusting, as he trusts Ryouma, who was not even a member of the Vanguard at that point.

Tomioka Tessai was the pseudonym for a painter and calligrapher in imperial Japan. He is regarded as the last major artist in the Bunjinga tradition and one of the first major artists of the Nihonga style. His real name was Yusuke, which he later changed to Hyakuren.
