When I was young, my mother used to use the term “back-seat driver” to describe me. I’ve always had a need to be in the driver’s seat. I drove everywhere when I was a kid. When my father argued with my mother, I wanted to be on his side. When my siblings argued, I wanted to be on their side. Before long, everyone in the family wanted me to take sides in their disagreements.
My parents grew tired of this, so they began deliberately playing matchmaker. They would ask me if I wanted to date a particular guy, and if I said yes, my parents would bring him home. They did this so often that they made a little game out of it and started calling it “matchmaking tea”:
“So how many dates have you been on with this boy?”
“Oh, we’ve been on six dates.
