Sonneman attended Brigham Young University, where he studied journalism. He was also a stand-up comedian in Las Vegas. At BYU he was active in the sketch comedy group "The Femme 5", which later became known as "The Sandbox".
After graduating, he joined the cast of the NBC sketch comedy show "Saturday Night Live" in 1997. He left the show in 2000 to star in the comedy film "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay".
