He knows how to put on a good show. He is capable of putting on a good show. For example, when I first met him in Xi’an, he always walked proudly up to me. He would act like he was talking with me and then, right before leaving, he would always turn to me with a big smile and tell me “goodbye” with a big hug. This was very charming, but also very manipulative. He knew how to please me and he knew how to make me feel great. He also knew how to make me feel bad. And I knew that he knew and he played it to his advantage when I was feeling bad.
I experienced this again during our last meeting in Xi’an. We were walking through the streets of the ancient city when we ran into a friend of his. I was a bit discouraged by his friend’s appearance and start to feel quite down about myself.
