He is a master of all forms of magic and a master swordsman. He was a childhood friend of Shirou Emiya and a master of the Matou style. He is also the father of Rin Tohsaka, the younger twin sister of Shirou Emiya.
In Fate/hollow ataraxia, Kariya makes a cameo appearance in the ending credits, where he is seen behind his son, Zouken Matou, as he leaves the Matou Manor. Rin Tohsaka also mentions Kariya's name when commenting on his supposed presence in Fuyuki City.
