He has three brothers: Nicholas (born in Rome, Italy in 1962), Giancarlo (born in Rome in 1963), and Brian (born in London, England in 1965). He is the youngest of four brothers. In his youth, he studied at the Paris-Sorbonne University of Paris and at the University of California at Berkeley.

    In 1994, Berluti made his New York Fashion Week debut as a runway model. His first runway show was for Christian Lacroix in 1995. In 1997, Berluti moved to Milan, where he began work as a fashion editor for Italian "GQ". In 1998, he joined the "GQ Italia" team as a fashion editor for men's fashion. In 1999, Berluti took over as creative director of "GQ Italia" after its founding editor, Maximilian Lynton, abruptly left the magazine.
