The anime starts with the young boy at a tournament that has just ended, and he watches the tournament games from a small crowd. The girl he is watching is revealed to be the elder sister of the girl he was watching the tournament with. She is also one of the present players at the tournament, but she has recently started playing again after a long hiatus.
The boy (Hikaru) watches her play, and he takes an immediate liking to her. At first he only thinks of her as a rival, but he soon realizes that she is in fact much more than that. She has a very strong presence, she plays well and she is obviously very good at the game.
