But Tanaka's humble demeanor hides a fierce determination to accomplish her goals. After losing her mother to cancer as a child, she says, she started looking for some type of purpose. In high school, she joined the cross-country team and focused on finishing school and going to college.
She studied chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles, and then medical science at the University of Minnesota, and was accepted into a PhD program at Stanford. She chose to pursue neuroscience instead, thinking that it would be a better place to help find a cure for cancer.
In 2012, Tanaka joined the Brown team as a post-doctoral fellow, working on developing new ways to study breast cancer.
"I was interested in studying the biology of normal breast development, but I was looking for a way to do it in a lab," she says. "It's hard to do it in a lab, so we turned to mouse models."
