Esther Mikaelson personality type is INFJ, however, her mother is a bit of a sociopath. We all know sociopaths aren't really mentally ill, but they do have deep seated emotional issues that cause them to push others away as a defense mechanism. However, as they get older and mature, they tend to become less of a problem, but they still have those issues that cause them to become socially awkward.
In the case of Esther's mother, she broke her promise to Esther's father - but she did so in a way that was a bit more subtle. She really only intended to keep her promise to him, by breaking it so she could keep her promise to Esther.
