He was the only child of Louis I, Duke of Bourgogne (1430-1465) and his first wife, Isabelle de Vaudémont (1421-1456), He was given the dukedom of Burgundy in 1467, which he later lost. He was married four times; firstly to Margaret of York (1447-1474), secondly to Anne of Brittany (1474-1476), thirdly to Isabeau de Bavière (1478-1505), and fourthly to Margaret of Savoy (1476-1503).
