Buchanan was born in London to American parents in 1929. His father was in the foreign service, so the family moved frequently. While in the U.S., Buchanan attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, graduating in 1947, then went on to Harvard University, where he studied economics. He graduated in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in economics.
After graduating from Harvard, Buchanan joined the foreign service, where he served in Paraguay, Bolivia, and Guatemala. He left the Foreign Service in 1961 to work for the Department of Defense, where he worked on counter-guerrilla operations.
Buchanan began writing novels in the early 1990s. His first novel, "The Soldiering Life", was published in 1993, and a second novel, "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", was published the following year.
Buchanan is a member of International Thriller Writers and an honorary lifetime member of the Mystery Writers of America. He is a recipient of the Grand Master Award from the Private Eye Writers of America.
