I am an introvert. This is something I learned the hard way. I remember reading one of my favorite books, The Secret Garden, when I was in the 6th grade. I read it over and over again, memorizing every page. I loved everything about it. It was sweet, had a great sense of adventure, and had a great moral about friendship and family. After I finished the book, I had to talk to my mom about it because I was so excited. My mom had never read it, but she listened to me gush about all the things that happened in the book, and she finally asked what book I was reading. “The Secret Garden,” I answered. “Oh,” she said. She moved on to telling me about her day, and never asked why I was so excited about this book. That is when I realized that she did not like reading. It was like learning that my mom did not like to eat ice cream.
I often think about this book now, because at my job, I work with people who don’t read.
