Josh’s (and my) relationship with his parents was complicated. He was not the stereotypical “tiger child” of the mid-80s. On the contrary, he was a loner who lived in his own world. His family knew this, but didn’t know what to do about it. As a result, Josh’s relationship with his parents was strained beyond what was reasonable. He was often withdrawn.
When Josh was 11, his father, who was the manager of a local sporting goods store, decided to sell the store. He did so because of mounting debt. This meant that his father, who was a very hands-on manager, needed to move away for work.
This posed a problem for Josh, who lived on his own during this time. His father was providing for him financially, but he could not be there for him emotionally.
