I'm also an ESTP, so I can tell you that I've had a lot of the same problems with being "judged" before. And I can also say that your method of dealing with it is actually much better than most of mine were. I've always been quite clueless when it comes to how to address the problem, so I would get defensive and even angry at times, or just silently stew over it and get angrier. I would also find myself being quite sarcastic, which just makes people think you are even more of a jerk. All in all, this just added to the problem.
This is actually the exact opposite of how I think I act at times like this. When something bothers me, it's usually best to just let it go and leave it alone. But a lot of the time, I'm not really sure if something is bothering me or not, so I'll overanalyze it and make a big deal out of it. This adds fuel to the fire and makes me feel even more upset about the situation.
