Keely was born in the United States and is from New Jersey. He was drafted into the army and was sent to Germany. After returning from the war, he joined the "Ironside" fraternity. He is always seen with a baseball bat, which he uses while playing baseball. He and Gary have always been friends and have been roommates since grade school. They have both tried to get along with the other's friends, but in the end their personalities have always prevailed.
