Evan Eskew, a professor of management and organization at Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Business, said the study's findings are consistent with his own experience in working with hundreds of MBAs.
"I've worked with dozens of MBAs over the past decade, and I can tell you that MBAs are very similar in terms of the types of jobs they go into and the types of work that they do for their first 10 or 15 years," Eskew said. "If you give them the opportunity to be entrepreneurial, MBAs are very entrepreneurial, and they tend to be Type S. If you take away that entrepreneurial option, they become Type N."
The findings also could mean that MBAs could benefit from an emphasis on personality types and career counseling at colleges and universities. While there is no doubt that personality is important in a person's life, "it's not something that I think most MBAs are aware of or take into account," Eskew said.
"It's probably a good idea to have faculty and staff provide counseling that looks at the individual's personality type and how it might affect how they pursue their career," he said.
