When you take into account that I was once a naive but open-minded idealist, and now I’m an intelligent, cynical, and self-assured cynic, there’s a lot of room for growth.
I still like to think of myself as an optimistic person, but I’ve come to understand that optimism is a self-fulfilling prophecy—that we can only truly believe we’re capable of something if we already do it.
It’s like a glass half-full or half-empty: if you’re optimistic, you’ll tend to take positive steps to make your glass fuller. If you’re pessimistic, you’ll tend to take negative steps to make your glass emptier.
In my case, I have a lot to learn about myself and the world. And I have a lot of growing up to do. But I think it’s important to be self-reflective and acknowledge the things I’ve already achieved—even if I could have done them better.
