The latest Naruto manga, released in 2009, has an estimated 22 million copies in print in Japan alone. The plot and characters are largely the same as the earlier manga, but it's primarily set in modern times and includes a lot of new characters, some of whom play major roles in the story.
According to a report by the Japan Statistical Information and Communication Service, the series is popular with pre-school children, but many middle-aged and older men also read the manga. The series has also been translated into other languages including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Russian.
The series is published in several different volumes in English by Viz Media.
In February 2010, the first Naruto film, Naruto Shippuden: The Movie, was released in Japanese theaters. It was released in English in June 2010 and the second film, Naruto Shippuden: The Movie 2: Bonds was released on December 13th 2010.
A live-action movie based on the series starring Masashi Kishimoto and directed by Hayato Kawai is due for release on May 3rd 2012.
