In the film “A Beautiful Mind,” John Nash is a brilliant mathematician who suffers from severe mental health issues. He is diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, a disease that causes hallucinations and delusions, but he is able to successfully hide his illness from the world while working on his mathematics.
In the film, while he is watching a basketball game, he hears voices in his head telling him that the ball belongs to him. At another point in the film, he hears the voices telling him that the world’s best basketball team, the Boston Celtics, belongs to him.
He attempts to communicate to others that he has a mental illness, but instead he is told that he has a “nervous breakdown” and is “mad.” He does not get the proper treatment for his mental illness until he is forced to undergo electroshock therapy due to his paranoia.
It is at this point in the film that his wife, Elizabeth, begins to have a change of heart about her husband’s mental illness.
