    He was the youngest of the Gershwin brothers, born on March 26, 1898 in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were Maurice and Amy Gershwin. In his early years he lost his father, who died from a heart attack at age 43 after a long struggle with alcoholism.

    After the death of his father, Gershwin’s mother became a successful opera singer and was able to send him to the best schools in the United States. When he was a teenager, he became a friend of a young poet named Edmund Wilson.

    In 1919, Gershwin started school at Harvard University, which was considered one of the best colleges in the American university system at the time. He also studied music theory and composition under Charles Seeger and Allen Forte. In 1921, he joined the Harvard Glee Club as a bass singer.

    In 1924, Gershwin entered Columbia University as a doctoral student in music. At that time he became friends with a young student named George Cohan.

    George Gershwin (/ˈɡɜːrʃ.wɪn/; born Jacob Bruskin Gershowitz, September 26, 1898 – July 11, 1937) was an American composer and pianist whose compositions spanned both popular and classical genres. Among his best-known works are the orchestral compositions Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928), the songs Swanee (1919) and Fascinating Rhythm (1924), the jazz standard I Got Rhythm (1930), and the opera Porgy and Bess (1935) which spawned the hit Summertime.
