    Johann Strauss II was an instrumental figure in the development of the operetta, which became a popular genre for Viennese musical comedy. His first significant contribution to musical comedy was his Der Zigeunerbaron (The Gypsy Baron), a work in which he introduced the waltz in Vienna in 1825. The work was a hit and was performed in Vienna in 1826, three years before it was performed in Paris in 1828. His greatest success, however, came when he wrote Die Fledermaus in 1874. In 1876 the work won the first international prize for operetta, which later became known as the Oscar.

    Johann Strauss II married four times, but only had one child from each marriage. Five of his wives died young, and he never married again after his fourth wife died in 1884.

    Johann Strauss II (25 October 1825 – 3 June 1899), also known as Johann Strauss Jr., the Younger, the Son (German: Sohn), Johann Baptist Strauss, son of Johann Strauss I, was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas. He composed over 500 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet. In his lifetime, he was known as "The Waltz King", and was largely responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century.
