Ruth Crawford Seeger (1901 – 1953), born Ruth Porter Crawford, was an American modernist composer active primarily during the 1920s and 1930s and an American folk music specialist from the late 1930s until her death. She was a prominent member of the American "ultramodern" composers, her music influenced later composers including Cowell, Beyer, and latterly Cage.
Ruth Crawford created pathbreaking music. Wulliman marveled: “As a woman of that generation, she wrote this piece that’s so ahead of its time. You see people dealing with these same musical ideas still, to this day.” Crawford was heavily influenced by Alexander Scriabin’s system of mystical atonality on one hand and Schoenberg’s Serialism on the other. She distilled both these approaches into her work on dissonant counterpoint, a theory first expounded by her husband Charles Seeger and heavily influenced by Crawford’s research. Her folk revival legacy has overshadowed her previous avant-garde compositions and achievements.
