The name "Baphomet" is derived from the ancient deity Baphomet or Bafometh, which has been variously represented in art, architecture, and religious iconography. This ancient deity combines elements of male and female deities, and is associated with the planet Mercury. Baphomet is also referenced in the Goetia of the Lesser Key of Solomon, which relates it to the demon Astaroth; however, the name "Baphomet" does not appear in this book.
There are several different depictions of Baphomet in European art. The most common representation shows Baphomet with a woman's head, breasts, and vulva. Some depictions show the god with a beard.[1]
Many Christians consider Baphomet to be an idol of Satan, while some Satanists consider Baphomet to be a representation of their god. The Baphomet symbol was used by the Knights Templar (who were persecuted during the Crusades), and was later adopted by various groups connected with Freemasonry. It is sometimes associated with the goat-headed god Set.
