Matsunaga Takauji was born in the 12th year of the Keicho era (1661). He was the eldest son of Matsudaira Nobutori of Matsudaira clan. This clan had a history of producing great warriors, which included Yoshitsune Minamoto, Takeda Shingen, Oda Nobunaga, and Date Masamune.
He was a direct descendant of Takeda Shingen and his wife Tokugawa Ieyasu’s daughter. The Takeda clan ruled over the eastern portion of Japan for a long time, and it was a great honor to have a member of this clan as a son-in-law.
At the age of just 14, Matsunaga served as a page to Ieyasu. In 1689, he was appointed as a captain in the Tosa domain forces. In 1694, he was appointed as a daimyo of Kawagoe domain.
