I was lucky enough to have spent a good amount of time with Ilana before she died. She had a way of drawing me into conversation, but I also felt that she had a very strong will, so I wasn’t sure if I could get through to her at all. Ilana was a very private person, and had known me just as long as I’d known her. We had been best friends for several years, but hadn’t really known each other well.
One morning, we were having a conversation about her favorite TV show, Friends. I mentioned how I loved the show too, and that I had watched it when it first came out. Ilana remembered the show well, but she said that she didn’t like it.
I was confused and asked her why not. She said that the main character on the show, Rachel, reminded her of a friend at school who had had a crush on her. Unfortunately, the friend was too insecure to admit that she liked Ilana, so she never pursued the relationship.
