Hans Capon was born in London, Ontario on July 22, 1912. He grew up in Toronto, where his father was a civil engineer. Hans Capon went to Toronto public schools until he was in his late teens, when he left to work as a clerk in a real estate office. He then took up a job as a mechanic, working his way up the ranks to become foreman of the shop. In the early 1930s, he discovered that his job would be made redundant if the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) was established; instead of becoming unemployed, he quit and enlisted instead.
He enlisted in the RCAF in 1933 as a mechanic and served with the RCAF 3rd Bomb Group during World War II. He was promoted to Warrant Officer in 1944. He remained with the Air Force after the war and retired on June 30, 1966.
He married Margaret Agnes "Peg" Levett on May 24, 1938 and had three children: Margaret ("Peg"), James, and Patricia. He died on March 11, 1992 at age 84.
