Even at an early age, Amália was nicknamed ‘O Pajeninha’ (the little girl) by her family and friends due to her refined mannerisms, and she was often described as a ‘girly girl’.

However, at the age of 11, Amália left school and began working as a household maid and nanny. It was at this stage in her very young life that she formed a close friendship with a young boy called José.

Both Amália and José were devout Catholics and attended Mass every day. The two were inseparable and would often go to confession together, much to the irritation of the priest, who was not used to having two children in his confessional at the same time.

Shortly before Amália’s 13th birthday, José was tragically killed by a stray dog when he was just 12 years old.

Amália passed the following year in a state of deep depression and released a number of sad songs in tribute to her friend.
