Kang Gang-Du was born in Hong Kong. He studied drama at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, then relocated to the United States to study at University of California, Irvine, where he earned a bachelor's degree in theater arts. He later attended the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, receiving a master's degree in film production. At USC, he met and helped inspire actress and filmmaker Cate Blanchett; the two remained friends until Blanchett's death in 2016.
Kang was a producer and director at Hollywood film production companies such as The Firm and Fox Searchlight Films. He is an executive producer on "The Conjuring", "The Conjuring 2", "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them", and "".
