The idea that I'm a "pure" artist or an "author" or a "musician" is a strong part of my identity. I would be really upset if someone said they were "just an artist." That's a really pompous term. It's a little like saying "I just like to write."
In my opinion, the world would be a better place if we valued the arts more highly. Art is an expression of the soul and an expression of its creator. It is a window on the inner self, and it can communicate with people who may not be able to communicate on another level. Art forms are as diverse as the people who create them. So I truly believe that artistic expression is something that needs to be celebrated and supported, not just in the arts, but in every aspect of our society.
And that's why I feel it's important for people to understand that artists are just people. No one is a "pure" artist. We all have other interests and other ways of expressing ourselves. And sometimes those other interests are part of who we are.
