During an interview, Hellhammer discussed his early musical influences, saying he was most influenced by heavy metal bands, such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Motörhead, and Megadeth.
Hellhammer played in the hardcore punk band Sentenced from 1982 to 1984. The band recorded an album with the same name as the band, but the album has never been released. Another album entitled "Hellhammer" was released in 2013 by Nuclear Blast Records. This album is a compilation of the band's recordings from 1982 to 1984.
From 1985 to 1988, Hellhammer played in the hardcore punk band "Sweden's Most Wanted", which was later renamed "Axxis".
