The IWW was formed as an alternative to other unions, especially the American Federation of Labor, which was heavily influenced by the politics of the capitalist class. The IWW was also influenced by the ideas of socialism, anarchism and communism. The IWW union was formed as an effort to organize unskilled laborers, many of whom were immigrants or Slavic workers. The IWW became known as an anarcho-syndicalist union; this meant that the union believed that it should be run democratically, without leaders.
