After a century of dictatorship, which included a massacre of the opposition and military coups, the regime fell in 1991. The first president elected was a democratic socialist, Boris Yeltsin. He was followed in 1999 by Vladimir Putin, who was a prime minister under Yeltsin and then appointed as president when Yeltsin stepped aside.
The Russian economy took a nosedive. The financial markets collapsed and inflation became rampant. But there was money for a new presidential palace and for Putin to spend lavishly on his home.
In 2000, he was elected Russia's president, a position that he has held ever since. He appeared to be an authoritarian leader with authoritarian tendencies, but he was in fact more liberal than his predecessors in some respects, such as allowing and even encouraging free expression and free elections.
But Putin has also shown an authoritarian streak since coming to power. In Russia's 2015 parliamentary elections, Putin's United Russia Party won a majority in the legislature, although he did not have the right to appoint a prime minister.
