Megatron, Megidramon and the Decepticons were created by the Quintessons, a race of shape-shifters. According to Megatron's origins, the Quintessons wanted to create a new race of warriors to defend them against the other shape-shifters in their universe, but the process turned their warriors into mindless killing machines. The Quintessons then transported them to Earth, where they fought the Autobots. As the Autobots won every battle, the Quintessons brought in Megatron, who was able to make his troops fight for him. However, Megatron was not satisfied with merely being a leader and wanted to become their king. After capturing the Quintessons, Megatron forced them to create a new race of warriors, the Decepticons, who were now the Quintessons' slaves. He then had the Decepticons attack their creators, and when they defeated the Quintessons, he became their king.
