Paracelsus was a Swiss-German physician, scientist and philosopher. He is regarded as the "father of toxicology," the originator of many of the pharmaceutical practices still used today, and the discoverer of several medical treatments, including the use of mineral acids and mineral salts, and the use of plant extracts for medicinal purposes. Paracelsus is best known for his work as a physician to the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II, and for his role in the development of modern medicine.

Paracelsus is said to have rejected the traditional medical practices of his time, including bloodletting and surgery, in favor of a medical practice based on observation and experimentation. He is also known for being among the first to recognize the importance of chemical compounds to medicine, rather than relying solely on herbal remedies. Paracelsus was also a proponent of a "medieval" or "paganized" version of alchemy and astrology, which he called "pharmacon." Paracelsus had a great influence on later chemical-based physicians such as Robert Boyle.
