He was born on Aug. 31, 1934. His family moved to Tokyo from Ehime Prefecture when he was a child.
He graduated from high school in Tokyo in 1952 and enrolled in what is now the Faculty of Agriculture at Tokyo University of Agriculture. He majored in agriculture science and graduated in 1956.
He worked as a researcher at a university affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Koto Ward from 1956 to 1960, after which he worked at the department of agricultural science at Tohoku University.
He also worked as a researcher at several other universities before becoming a professor at Kanto Kyokai University in 1993. He was in charge of the department of agriculture science at the university’s Graduate School of Agricultural Science and Policy until his retirement in 2005.
He participated in the establishment of the Japan Society for Plant Genome Research.
