It's undeniable, and sad, that he ultimately emulated the precise opposite of his youthful idealism.
What's even sadder is that Obama's character type was so obvious to his closest friends and advisers. As 2008 Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards has recounted: "I literally took the elevator up to Barack Obama's office and I said, 'Are you sure you want to do this?' I said, 'You're a liberal, you're an idealist, you're an intellectual, you're a community organizer, you're a Harvard Law graduate, you're African-American. There are 50 ways this doesn't work.' And he said, 'But it does.' And I said, 'Do you realize what you are? You are a lonely voice.'"
