Os Mutantes are an influential Brazilian rock band that were linked with the Tropicália movement, a dissident musical movement during the Brazilian dictatorship of the late 1960s. They released their acclaimed self-titled debut album in 1968. The band is considered to be one of the main groups of brazilian rock. Like many groups from the 60s, Os Mutantes were heavily influenced by The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Sly & the Family Stone. But they were also deeply submerged in their local culture, exercising their own creativity in the use of feedback, distortion, and studio tricks of all types, as it was done by the Liverpool quartet and by The Beach Boys. In this sense, Os Mutantes were pioneers in the mixture of rock and roll with Brazilian musical and thematic elements. Another characteristic of the group was their irreverence.
