Piper (パイパー) is a Japanese funk-synth pop band that was primarily active in the 1980s. The band was formed as a duo named Skunk in 1980 and changed its name to Piper in 1981 with the addition of new members. The group is led by guitarist and vocalist Keisuke Yamamoto (山本圭右), whom Tatsuro Yamashita has referred to as "five fingers" due to his ability to play a variety of styles.
The band has named Camel (band) and Wishbone Ash as influences, even though their music has a more soul- and fusion-oriented sound. Yamamoto's playing style is influenced by Jeff Beck.
The group reunited in 2018 and plans to re-release all of their studio albums. They performed in Blues Alley in Tokyo in 2019 and at Rock Joint GB in 2020. As of 2020, their albums Summer Breeze, Gentle Breeze, and Sunshine Kiz have been reissued by Light in the Attic Records.
