A new study suggests that it's not just chefs who are intuitive.
"Intuition is the fundamental part of every one of us," said Dr. Paul Ekman, who leads the University of California, San Francisco's Emotion Research Lab.
Ekman's team tested 45 participants on their ability to identify basic emotions in faces. The test is designed to measure what Ekman calls "the unconscious perception of emotion."
"The participants were asked to look at the faces of people on the street and decide whether they were happy or sad," said Ekman. "The idea is that the participants are unconsciously picking up on differences in the facial expressions of the people on the street. But some faces are more difficult than others."
Ekman wanted to make sure that the test didn't rely on people knowing what emotions they were supposed to be picking up on. So he added some new faces to the mix, which contained large eye-dots, or blobs, on them.
