Manga Debut
Jōtarō first appears in chapter 1 of the manga. He is introduced as a shy, sympathetic young man who was once the top student at the Seiō Gakuen Middle School, but later dropped out due to his stress over failing to pass an exam. Throughout the manga, he gets progressively better at using his Quirk to make his dreams come true.
After hearing about the "Hero Association", Jōtarō decides to apply for the Hero Association's entrance exam along with his childhood friend Rōta. During the exam, he is caught in a Quirk Gap with Shinsou Hitoshi and ends up getting the lowest score on the exam. Since he failed to meet the passing score, he is not allowed to join the Hero Association. However, he manages to convince Rōta to pass the exam as well. Afterward, Jōtarō has a dream where he meets the first hero of the association, Mineta Mineta. After awakening from his dream and seeing Mineta's power, Jōtarō decides that he wants to be a hero.
