Jude nodded.
“Yeah, that’ll work,” Jude said. “And then, when it gets weird, you can tell me.”

After his dad left, Jude did something he’d never done before. He went to the top floor of his house and sat on the roof. It was the only part of the house that was accessible from the roof without going through one of the windows. The roof was at least fifteen feet above the ground, so it didn’t feel that high, even though it was. It was also flat, which made it hard to get comfortable. He wished it had a little bit of a slope, like the one on the front porch. At least then he could lay down on his stomach and rest his head on his arms.
