Originally from the USA, her family moved to Japan after her father became a diplomat. She had a difficult time adjusting to the culture, and she didn't like particular aspects of Japanese culture. She was very friendly with her classmates and teachers, but she was treated as an outsider because of her American accent and background. However, the Yamano family was doing very well financially and they wanted to keep it that way so they sent their daughter back to America with a full scholarship to an Ivy League university.
