The son of Venezuelan immigrants, Miranda grew up in a moderately poor home. He learned to speak English at an early age. His mother was a school teacher, and his father worked as a janitor. Miranda's father left his family when Juan was 9 years old, and his mother struggled to raise her family on her own. Miranda grew up poor, but he never felt deprived because of his cultural background.
Miranda had a difficult time with school. He had trouble learning English, he struggled with math, and he had problems with anxiety. By high school, Miranda had dropped out of seven of eight schools he attended. At the age of 17 he joined the Air Force, where he received his GED, but was discharged after six months due to anxiety. He returned to school at the age of 22 and earned a high school diploma. While in school, Miranda joined the ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps). When he graduated at age 25, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.
