Barton was born in the Bronx, New York, on 20 October 1931. She was raised by her mother, who was an English teacher. Barton's father died when she was 5 years old; she has said that she never knew her father, but that he had "taught her how to be a man". She attended Townsend Harris High School, graduating in 1949. She then attended Hunter College, where she studied English literature.
She took night classes at Columbia University part-time. She became a writer after graduating from Hunter College in 1954. Her first novel was published in 1963. She also wrote for magazines, including "Harper's", where she was a contributing editor.
Barton married Francis X. Morris, a lawyer, on December 26, 1960. The couple had three children, two of whom are now deceased. She died on 8 December 2013 at her home in North Carolina.
