Lyndon’s childhood may have been a bit unconventional for a 5 year old. He was raised in the middle of an apple orchard in Appleton, Wisconsin. His father worked as a conductor on the railroad and was often gone for long periods of time. In the afternoons his mother would take Lyndon out to help her cut apples with a sickle. Lyndon learned the art of getting the most fruit from the smallest space, which would come in handy later in life.
A not uncommon childhood event for Lyndon Johnson was the near drowning of his younger brother Lyndon junior when Lyndon was 8 years old. Lyndon was in charge of watching over his brother during this event and he saved his brother’s life by pulling him out of the water.
