Erik studied graphic design in college. He received a certificate in graphic design from the Art Institute of Tennessee in Nashville in 1998.
Erik began his music career when he wrote songs for fellow musician Paul Harris, who was looking for another songwriter to work on his fourth album. Harris had previously recorded two albums with Erik as a songwriter and musician.
