A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in classical music, he remains one of the most famous and influential of all composers. His best-known compositions include 9 symphonies, 5 piano concertos, and 16 string quartets, as well as pieces such as the "Moonlight Sonata". Beethoven's name is eponymously associated with many musical genres, including the sonata, the folksong, and the chord progression.

    Beethoven was deaf from 1816 until his death from cirrhosis of the liver in 1827.

    Beethoven was born in Bonn, then the capital of the Electorate of Bonn. Although his father wanted him to become a lawyer, Beethoven showed great interest in music from an early age. He received some instruction from his brother-in-law, Ludwig Amadeus Mozart.
