“When I had my first child, I was not just among the first of my friends to become a father. I was also among the first to be elected mayor of the city. The day of my first inauguration had just passed. Upon returning home, I was pursued on the street by journalists, photographers, and all manner of reporters. It was like a scene out of a movie, but it was real. I was overwhelmed, but I kept on smiling. I felt like a hero. I was ready for them; they were not ready for me.
What had happened was that some time after I had begun my term as mayor, I had made an arrangement with the newspaper O Diário to do an interview on my first six months as mayor.
