    He based the book on an actual game he played with his friends. He said he wanted to create a “what if” kind of story, where the reader would get to see what might happen if something like that happened.

    Portis said that he did not think about the characters while writing the book; it was more like he was painting a picture with words. Portis said that he did not know whether or not people would like the book, but he thought it would be a good idea to write a book that would be a bit different from other horror stories.
